Bangladesh Economy Overview

Flag of Bangladesh
Economic Environment : Remains one of the world’s poorest, most densely populated, and least developed nations. Major impediments to growth include frequent cyclones and floods, the inefficiency of state-owned enterprises, a rapidly growing labour force that cannot be absorbed by agriculture, delays in exploiting energy resources (natural gas), inadequate power supplies, and slow implementation of economic reforms. Has made some headway to improve climate for foreign investors and liberalising capital markets. :
Industries : Economy based on agriculture, mainly jute, rice, sugarcane, tea, tobacco, and wheat. World’s largest producer of jute. Fishing is also important.
Infrastructure : Seaports suffer from inefficient space management and a shortage of handling equipment. Good primary road network. Extensive inland waterways. Railway system in a poor condition. Modernisation and expansion of airports planned. Inadequate electricity supply and telecommunications services.
