Economic Environment : India’s economy encompasses traditional village farming, modern agriculture, handicrafts, a wide range of modern industries and a multitude of support services. Production, trade, and investment reforms have provided new opportunities for Indian businesspersons and an estimated 300 million middle class consumers. :
Industries : Agriculture, leading crop is rice, followed by wheat, sugarcane and tea. Among the world leaders in production of many of its mineral and precious metal resources. Textile production is the leading manufacturing industry. Produces large amounts of machine tools, transportation equipment, and chemicals, and has a growing computer software industry.
Infrastructure : Energy, telecommunications and transportation shortages abound. Most towns are connected by state-owned railroad systems. Transportation by road is increasing, but in rural India, the bullock cart is still important.
